There used to be this thing in America called “traveling salesperson,” and there were literally automobiles tailored towards this lifestyle, similar to a sedan delivery for a plumber. The life of a traveling salesman was on its way out by the 1950s as America continued to develop after World War II, and there were less and fewer automobiles available for this lifestyle.

This 1953 Kaiser Traveler sold by a Minnesota dealer on ClassicCars.com is the Pick of the Day because Kaiser was one of the last manufacturers to continue producing this kind of vehicle. (To view the listing, click the link.)

The Kaiser Traveler was created beginning in 1949, but the modified 1951 models were when it really came into its own. The Traveler, billed as “the world’s most adaptable car,” was a “luxurious 6-passenger sedan” that could transform into a cargo carrier in just ten seconds.

Thanks to the double-hinged back deck, it was like having a sedan with station wagon adaptability, or, if you like, a camp-on-wheels for two sportsmen. The most were available in Special and Deluxe trim levels, but one was discovered in the expensive Manhattan series. Additionally, Travelers had innovative heavy-duty vinyl upholstery made by low-pressure refrigerator embossing. Despite being more functional than fashionable, some claim that the Traveler was the first hatchback.

The outdated straight-six has been replaced with a 307 V8 from a 1969 Chevrolet in the engine bay, however the four-speed overdrive automatic transmission is unquestionably newer. Highway cruising is considerably more bearable with a 1969 Camaro rear end in high ratios than it was with the original powertrain set-up.

When you enter the vehicle, you will see digital gauges in the instrument panel. If you look around some further, you’ll notice that the power-operated velour seats have replaced the original vinyl. Power steering and disc brakes (excellent stopping power!). 12-volt rewire, detailed motor, and motor bay,” the seller continues. Shoulder belts from a more recent car demonstrate that safety hasn’t been overlooked either.

With just over 900 constructed, this is a car that is uncommon, but it boasts a form of practicality that works well today for the gentleman or gal who wants to have it all with a practical classic, the seller says, “If you appreciate rare orphans, this is your opportunity for only $23,950.”
