Ludivine, from Elkmont, Alabama, had no idea that she would be known as Elkmont’s hero on that sunny day when she ran in the Elkmont Half Marathon by accident and finished seventh, earning a medal and making history as the first dog to win a medal in a marathon when other dogs peed. She liked hearing the people around her as she went about her day, especially when her owner let her use the bathroom.
When she is free, Ludivine usually only roams the area around the farm where she now lives. She approached the crowd as they prepared to begin the race because today was a special day because the Elkmont Half Marathon was nearby.
Ludivine snuck up to the starting line and got ready to go before anyone noticed she was there. As soon as the race started, everyone began running at full speed, and she continued at their side, looking more excited than everyone else. She probably thinks she’s interacting with new friends while she plays. The dog runs with the fastest runners and stays with them for every lap.
Still, Ludivine abandoned the competition to pursue a rabbit. She wandered off the trail occasionally to holler at cows and stop to smell the roses. In all my years of knowing marathon runners, Ludivine is the most impulsive.
Ludivine completed the marathon in 1 hour 32 minutes and 56 seconds, placing her in sixth place overall. This unintentional athlete was granted a medal for his strong performance and pleasant attitude.
The racegoers showered Ludivine with love and attention. As a result of this perception, the event was dubbed “Half Hound” in honor of the dog Ludivine.
